What is a smart trailer, and what makes it different from the telematics–equipped trailers I already have in my fleet?
Smart trailer technology is about much more than simple location data. Traditional tracking systems show only a limited picture of the trailer journey: prolonged movement or prolonged dormancy. And on many legacy systems, even that picture is delayed, often only sending after the trailer has been in motion for 10–15 minutes or covers a certain distance. By the time that update reaches a dispatcher or fleet manager, the trailer may already be miles down the road.
The time cost alone between when a mistake is made and when that mistake is caught can mean an hour or more of lost driver time, equipment time, and fuel. So, while fleets can and do use latent tracking data to improve trailer utilization and efficiency, that data often lacks the real situational clarity needed to create meaningful operational impact.

What is XTRA's smart trailer technology?
XTRA's smart trailer technology is a scalable, plug–and–play option for our customers. Simple enough for fleets of any size to use, yet powerful enough to revolutionize the way fleets approach telematics workflows. Built on the tenets of visibility, safety, and security, XTRA's smart trailer has four core components: the Stealthnet+ Smart Hub, a CargoVision camera, door sensors, and ABS alert monitoring.
Together, those technologies are designed to give fleets a more complete understanding of trailer activity across the full journey, from the yard, to the road, to the customer site, and back again. The goal is not simply to add more information. It is to give customers clearer, more useful intelligence they can act on now.
StealthNet + Smart Trailer Hub (GPS Location)
The technology behind XTRA's smart trailer centers around the smart tracking hub. Rather than XTRA's previous nose–mounted, solar–powered modules, the new Stealthnet+ smart hub is mounted safely below the trailer. This placement provides greater security by being less visible and harder to remove than nose–mounted units, while also being tamper–resistant and able to alert changes in status or orientation instantly.
The under–trailer placement also allows connection to the trailer's standard under–van wiring harnesses using industry–standard connections (Read: no splicing.) That means the system can also connect to the OEM wiring harness and read information from other safety systems like ABS warning lights without the safety and warranty concerns that can come with splicing OEM cables.
In addition to a new mounting location, the Stealthnet+ smart hub is powered differently than legacy units. When connected by a standard 7–pin connection, the device receives constant power from the tractor. This allows it to gather up–to–the–second GPS data while transmitting exact GPS coordinates every five minutes. That faster reporting, paired with the CargoVision camera and door sensors, gives a clearer picture of real–time trailer status than ever before.
When the trailer is not connected to a power unit, the hub continues operating on battery power and can still monitor trailer state for at least six months according to the manufacturer. But even when the trailer is not connected to power, it is still passively checking trailer state. For instance, if a yard truck connects to the trailer without connecting power, the Stealthnet+ device is sensitive enough that any movement at more than 5 mph for 5 seconds will trigger a new trip event.
That matters because some of the most important trailer events for your drivers do not happen on the highway. Yard moves, repositioning, and short lot transfers can all affect the time a driver spends looking for a trailer if your current tracking system is not catching lot moves. While some systems may not record that move at all because it was too short or too slow to register, XTRA's smart trailer technology gives fleets a clearer view of how equipment is being used, both on the road and on the lot, and can save time and frustration for front–line workers.
CargoVision and Door Sensors
While improved location data alone would be transformative for many fleets, the addition of the CargoVision camera and door sensors allows trailer data to tell a much more complete story about trailer activity and status. No longer are fleets relying on acoustic sensors or manual trailer checks to assess loaded status. The new CargoVision camera and door sensors work in tandem to bring more visibility, more certainty, and more control into fleet operations.
Less Guessing
With legacy tracking systems, a trailer could arrive at a DC and be parked for 20–25 minutes before the dispatcher or fleet manager receives an arrival notification. Then, that dispatcher or fleet manager may not get another meaningful update until the trailer has been hooked up and has already left the DC. Was the trailer unloaded? Was it reloaded? Were the doors even opened?
On many lots, trailers are still manually tracked, manually located, and manually tagged across massive DC footprints. And while some fleets use acoustic sensors to determine whether a trailer is loaded or unloaded, those systems can be prone to reading dunnage or trash as a full trailer. In many operations, that still means human labor is required to verify trailers marked clear but showing loaded.

Pairing the Stealthnet+ smart hub with CargoVision and door sensors gives fleet managers a clearer understanding of the freight journey from dock to dock and the ability to address issues directly. ABS Alert Monitoring
