Chicago-based Multi Group Logistics recently completed a deal to lease 250 additional new dry vans equipped with aerodynamic side skirts, low-rolling resistance tires and trailer tracking from trailer lessor XTRA Lease.
Multi Group will have a total of 700 leased side-skirted dry vans from XTRA Lease, model-year 2012 and newer, when production of new trailers this year is complete.
Multi Group Logistics is a fast-growing truckload carrier providing asset-based truckload service across the U.S. Owner Vassil Bayraktarov said he completed the deal with XTRA Lease, the nation’s leading provider of semi-trailer rentals and leases, to accommodate growth. Multi Group also relies on new equipment to reduce trailer downtime and maintenance, ensure “on-time-every time” delivery service they commit to all customers and save fuel.
With deliveries expanding to the West Coast, Bayraktarov said he also needed compliant trailers that would meet the California Air Resources Board’s (CARB) Greenhouse Gas requirements. California requires the use of side-skirted trailers and low-rolling resistance tires on semi-trailers.
The carrier’s owner said he depends on new trailers to produce results and keep clients satisfied.
“With a great delivery record of 99.8% on-time maintaining a young, low-age fleet of tractors and trailers is a must. Newer trailers reduce the chance of service failures and expensive over-the-road repairs,” he said. “I value the flexibility of a lease. I’m able to renew my fleet as business needs and regulations change.”
Bayraktarov requested trailer tracking service on all trailers from XTRA Lease to keep its leased fleet utilized and to integrate with their in-cab mobile computing platform installed in each tractor for 100% visibility of all trucks and trailers. It also helps them run a low trailer-to-tractor ratio of 1.5 to 1. “Trailer tracking helps us maintain a great delivery record while helping us optimize the use of trailers,” he said.
Established in 2004 with a fleet of 30 tractors, Multi Group grew to 500 tractors and 775 trailers in less than 10 years.
“Growth comes after you have structure, not just after adding a few customers,” said Bayraktarov. “Young companies must develop business rules, best practices and performance measurements. It is difficult, almost impossible, to manage, measure and grow without established processes and solid suppliers. As our years in trucking increase, we are always looking to improve.”
XTRA Lease recently announced it was adding new trailers available for rent and lease again in 2013. The company is adding 2,500 new vans, reefers, flatbeds and chassis and has refreshed its fleet with nearly 30,000 new trailers built since 2010.
Based in St. Louis and owned by Berkshire Hathaway, XTRA Lease is a leading provider of over-the-road trailers for rent or lease in the U.S. With nearly 60 locations, the company offers a fleet of approximately 80,000 trailers, including dry vans, flatbeds, reefers, local cartage vans, storage trailers and specialty equipment.
